Falls are not optional
A paved surface is built with about two per cent fall — some two centimetres per metre — away from the building. You cannot see it in the finished surface, but you notice it in every downpour: without it the water stands, freezes in winter and works the joints apart. Where the water cannot run off freely, a channel and gully are added — both planned in advance rather than cut in afterwards.
A driveway is not built like a garden path
A surface a car drives over needs a considerably stronger base than one you merely walk on. That is why, during the survey, we ask what will actually happen on the surface — including whether a heavier vehicle occasionally comes onto it. Layer thickness, unit size and laying bond follow from that. Paving laid in a herringbone bond interlocks better under load than a stretcher bond, but it costs more cutting.

How long does a normal driveway take?
A typical car driveway takes a few working days — excavation and base usually take longer than the laying itself. We state the actual period in the quote, once we have seen the site.
Natural stone or concrete?
Concrete is more dimensionally consistent, cheaper and available in almost any format. Natural stone costs more but ages better and individual units can be replaced. We show samples of both before you decide.
